You visited Italy, and wow, the weather was beautiful! A hot, humid summer cooled by swims in the sea. Crisp, breezy spring and autumn seasons. You might have imagined that we get sunshine and warm weather all year because it’s the Mediterranean.
Italy has real seasons.
Actual winters with snow. I live on Sardinia, and parts of the island get snow during the winter. Where I live, snow and freezing temperatures are rare. But it’s still rainy and cold with high winds that can blow the tiles off your roof. You can go to the beach, but in a winter coat and boots.
Italy is not a tropical country. Don’t think of Italy and picture the Caribbean (outside of our summers). Summer on Sardinia is wildly hot. We get months of high 30s Celsius, which is high 90s Fahrenheit. And it’s humid. And sometimes not even breezy.
Italy is actually further north than you might realize.
- Naples (~40°N): roughly the same latitude as Madrid, Salt Lake City, Beijing, and Denver.
- Rome (~42°N): roughly the same latitude as Chicago and Boston.
- Milan (~45°N): roughly the same latitude as Minneapolis, Montreal, Portland (Oregon), and Bordeaux (France).
- Palermo, Sicily (~38°N): roughly the same latitude as Washington DC.
There’s something for everybody in Italy!
Italy isn’t just rolling hills or beaches. There are mountains like the Alps and Dolomites with skiing, winter sports, and cool summers.
