As an American (now dual citizen) living in Italy since January 2018, I’m often asked when I’m “going home” and “what I miss about America.”
I am home.
Northern Sardinia felt like home when I first started visiting in 2017, which made moving here easier. I wasn’t an American expat. I’m an Italian inpat. I’m “in patria,” in my country. I didn’t move away from America by mistake or in a hasty rush. It was planned for 1.5 years before the actual move. When am I going home? I’m already here! When will I visit America again? As of writing this in September 2026, I have no plans to visit America for any business or personal reasons. What do I miss about America?
In no particular order, and #Not Sponsored:- My friends.
- Carmex lip balm.
- Water flavor packets, TrueLemon and Klass brands.
- OTC drugs that don’t exist here or are very expensive, like calamine lotion, pepto bismol, and analgesics by the 500-count bottle.
- Clarity pimple lotion by Cosmedix.
- My fave bands don’t usually tour to Italy, and I have to fly to other countries to see them.
